SNACKS
In first grade, students bring in their own snack every day. I always ask for
healthy snacks, as we try to incorporate healthy living into our classroom.
We have one snack in the morning and another time for an optional snack in the
afternoon.
Here are some ideas for acceptable snacks: Fruits (fresh, canned, dried),
vegetables, pretzels, crackers, cheese, applesauce,popcorn.
Please do not send in the following snacks with your first grader:
fruit snacks, fruit roll-ups, chocolate, cookies, cake, etc. NO NUTS are allowed in
our classroom due to a peanut and tree nut allergies. Thanks for sending your child
with important 'brain food'! (Note: this is for snack only, for lunch you may send
whatever you wish.)
LUNCH MONEY
Please send lunch money in a sealed envelope marked with my name and your child's first
and last name. Labeling it as lunch money will also be quite helpful. I will ask your child to
deliver it to the office independently.
TOYS
Please enjoy toys at home! This includes any type of video/game device. It is school-wide
policy that they should not be at school. Thank you in advance!
END OF DAY TRANSPORTATION
Please send a note or an email if you have any end of the day transportation changes. If I do
not have a note from home, I assume that your child will be riding the bus home after school
unless you have already established consistent pick up days with me. If your child will not be
riding the bus, please let me know who will be picking him/her up after school. Thank you so
much for helping me to be sure that everyone is getting to the right location at the end of the
day!
GYM SHOES
Please be sure that your child has a pair of shoes to keep in his/her locker at school for
indoor gym class. This is so that we can keep the gym floor clean. If the weather is nice,
it is best to send your child in gym appropriate footwear to school as they will not be able
to wear their gym shoes outdoors when there is outdoor gym class. We prefer that first
graders have shoes that do not tie as we need to make a QUICK shoe change before gym
class. We want to be sure that the kids have a full 30 minutes for gym class and do not use
our precious gym time waiting for classmates to tie shoes. Please understand that I am
unable to assist in shoe-tying for 25 kiddos. I always tell them I will tie their shoes for them
only one time during the year, and it is their responsibility after that. If your child is still
working to perform this task quickly, shoes without laces are the best bet! Velcro is a
brilliant invention!
BIRTHDAY TREATS
If your child would like to bring in a birthday treat, that is fine. However, it is first grade
policy that edible treats will not be allowed. Your child may bring in an inexpensive prize
of some type, stickers, or a book to donate to the classroom for his/her birthday treat.
These small prizes are just as special to classmates as a towering sugary cupcake!
Class balls/recess toys have also been popular. And a surprise from last year was a bunch
of construction paper that the kids could use for anything they wanted. They thought they
won the lottery! Some kids choose not to bring anything in, so please do not feel obligated.
We will always sing and make each child feel special on his/her birthday! Thank you so
much for your co-operation!
CLASSROOM RULES
Ada Vista emphasizes respect and a family like environment. We will talk about what it
looks like to show respect for self and others. Ask your child to give examples of what
respect looks like. Also, in first grade, personal responsibility is a BIG thing that we
work on.
BIRTHDAY INVITATIONS
Please note that it is school policy that birthday invitations are not to be passed out
at school unless the entire class is invited. This includes putting them in backpacks
when nobody is looking. We have directories available for $3 in the office. I hope
you all understand why this policy is in place. Thank you!
